Studio 101 Formal Training

In addition to our model shoots where photographers and models enjoy studio time to practice and learn from each other, we also offer this more formal Studio 101 Training

Photographers who have an interest in learning more about how to shoot primarily studio portraits, can now pick up a wide variety of education in one session, all aimed at the art and techniques of shooting male portraits, including nudes.

This training is suitable for anyone who has a digital SLR and can set the basic settings such as shutter speed and ISO. No previous studio experience is necessary to attend and the training is perfect for anyone just getting started with photography or studio work. It may also benefit those with basic experience who desire to have more formal training.

You will learn:

  • The termology and techniques involved in shooting in a photography studio.

  • Basic camera settings for various lighting situations/studio equipment.

  • Options for lighting your model to obtain a variety of looks including demo of many lighting patterns and use of various light modifiers and studio accessories.

  • How to create effective high key and low key images.

  • Ideas for posing male models including how to emphasize muscles and create more dramatic images.

  • Tips related to outdoors and fun creative options including discussion of paint, flour, composite images, and projected images. These topics will only be covered at a very high level to get you thinking about options.

  • Examples of many props that can be used in male photo shoots.

  • My workflow post shoot for editing and sharing images (programs not covered, rather, overview provided).

  • What is needed to set up your own home studio.

  • The legal aspects related to shooting nude models and some other basic business of photography items.

Overall you will be more comfortable taking charge next time you're in the studio with a model and you will be able to better practice studio techniques at our regular model workshops or any other studio

There will be a combination of lecture, Q&A, and demo/practice time using the studio lights. A stand in for a model will either be one of the participants at times, or a male mannequin since the primary goal of this workshop is not about capturing great images of a hot male model, rather, it is to take time to learn and practice the use of studio lights and other key concepts in a live studio.

You can see from the overview of topics, listed below we address many areas of interest beyond studio lighting.

Check out our meetup page to see the current schedule and look for "STUDIO 101 TRAINING" sessions.  It is free to join meetup, but the sessions require payment. Upon registering, you will be sent a brief camera setting overview guide (PDF) which you are encouraged to review prior to the session to get a head start, including the proper settings for your camera.

We will review that material at the start of the session to answer any questions, and then promptly move into the rest of the content. A 75 page guide is provided to all who attend (sent as a PDF with many links) and you are encouraged to bring a printed copy to the session so you can take notes.

I've spent oveer two years shooting most weeks to refine and learn a lot about shooting male models in studio and outdoors. I'm now happy to be able to provide a one stop training session that covers all of the key concepts and techniques with you!

Current cost for this workshop is $160 (early registraion discount may be offered).

A deposit is paid to reserve your spot and covers the cost of the training guide (you can print your own hard copy - a PDF is provided after you register and you may make a single hard copy for the workshop). The balance is due at start of the training. Training is held in our Arlington VA studio and will be scheduled for four hours to allow time for some demonstrations, discussion and your questions.

If you register and pay the deposit and then cancel or no show, the deposit you paid is non refundable and covers the cost of the guide which you will be provided via email prior to the workshop. If you attend a future 101 Training, you may receive a discount of $50 if you paid the deposit and then didn't attend. If you attend this class, you will receive a discount on a future model workshop where you can practice your skills.
